Club History

1990 - 51 page booklet commemorating 100 years of Worplesdon Cricket Club produced by Jeff Holliday and Terry Cater at a cost £2.50 each.
Other memorabilia included cricket shirts with club badge. separate club badges and commemorative pens. President's XI played in 1880's costume in the annual match versus the club XI. There was also an egg throwing competition, horse shoe throwing and a tug of war. First ever cricket week was held, which included the first ever double wicket competition; a six a side tournament involving Burpham, Wood Street and Fairlands which was won by Worplesdon. Fixtures versus Frank Cook's Somerset XI and Normandy were both won by the visitors.
Memorabilia is still on display in the pavilion in 1999, more is in the Memorial Hall and Guildford Museum have the early minute books on 'loan'.
Peter Grant scored 1256 runs, the second year running to score over 1000 runs in a season. The club came 3rd in the Surrey best kept Sports Ground. The club quiz team came 4th out of 16 in the league quiz, the only Division 2 club represented. Contentious AGM after the 2nd XI Captain was not re-elected after 6 years in office. This decision led to an EGM being called, and with the vote being upheld several players resigned from the club.

1991 - D Hollely resigned from post as groundsman, Guildford Borough quoted £4,000 for the seasons work.
Apology sent to Blackheath in respect of the poor tea provided by the University of Surrey.
Club received information re the formation of the Fullers League for 1993.
Applications had been posted re grants towards the purchasing of sight screens and a spiker.
Saturday 1st X1  were 'runners up' in the Morrants League.
Stuart Jackson sets best ever Sunday 2nd  XI bowling figures of Overs 5 Maidens 15 Runs 8 Wickets versus Surlib.

1992 - Club resigns from the Morrants League to join the Fullers league. A regular umpire had been found for the 1st XI fixtures –J Challis.
Club joins Guildford Sports Council for an annual fee of £2.00, and the first meeting secured £560.00 towards ground improvements i.e. sight screens.
Roy Terry undertakes typing of minutes, newsletters, averages etc.
Poor turnouts led to 2 committee meetings being cancelled and 2 more being 'working meetings'.
Grant of £560.00 received from the Guildford Sports Council towards purchase of two sight screens. The sight screens in total cost £1,120.

1993 - Terry Cater takes over ground maintenance after sudden resignation of the employed head groundsman in April.
Acquisition of new netting and a good second hand matting strip purchased. Attendance at the nets increased.
Club reach final of the Admiral Dunlop Cup, losing to Horsley.
Highest ever Saturday 1st  XI partnership of 162 set by Peter Grant and Andy Grant versus Ewhurst.

1994 - Artificial wicket ordered at a cost of £4,500 + VAT, to be installed in the first two weeks of December.
Peter Grant scores over 1000 runs in a season for the fourth time.
Denis Lavery becomes 1st XI umpire. Proposed Housing Development will be closely monitored. Neither the six a side tournament, due to lack of interest; nor the President's XI match, due to illness, took place.

1995 - First match takes place on the artificial strip, i.e. club match in April. First Club Race Night and Golf Day, big success.
Chairman expresses concern over lack of commitment of club members.
A number of committee meetings had to be cancelled.
The Sunday 1st X1 Captain organised on an unsatisfactory rota basis.
Surviving members of the clubs Flora Doris success in 1955 were presented with momentos at the Annual Dinner Dance.
Roger Travaskis, representing the clubs 2nd  X1, won the overall Fullers League bowling award with 198.2 Overs 63 Maidens 51 Wickets 405 Runs at an average of 7.94.

1996 - Keith Breslin takes 15 "outfield" catches in the League, for the 2nd  X1. Peter Grant scores 134 versus South Bank Poly, highest Saturday 1st  X1 score. Phil Allen scores 133 versus South Bank Poly, highest Saturday 2nd  X1 score. Concerns expressed over deterioration in the verbal behaviour during matches.
Jumble Sales were discontinued due to the lack of support from playing members.
Bob and Joan Brooks retire, after good service to the Cricket Club in particular.

1997 - Residents complain officially re ball damaging a car.
Kingstonian.C.C. complain officially re the behaviour of a Worplesdon player, who is suspended from early games in 1998.
Motorised Spiker jointly purchased with Wood Street C.C
Continued lack of club members commitment at social and fund raising events.
Number of Sunday 2nd X1 fixtures reduced.
Richard Tweddle, representing the clubs 2nd  X1 , won the overall Fullers League bowling award with 242.2 Overs 58 Maidens 43 Wickets 661 Runs at an average of 15.37.

1998 - Tragic death of Tim Bailey, both league fixtures cancelled, by the club, as a mark of respect.
4 Safety Helmets purchased for the use of all club members.
The main Pavilion subjected to a thorough and hygienic clean.
First occurrence of damage caused by cricket balls to the new residents housing.
Two attempts at "break ins" to the machinery shed.
Treasurer expressed concern about the increase in costs and decrease in general income. Club record partnership of 207 set by Elliot Lee and Mike Black in a 2nd XI league game.
Concern about the welfare of the club generally, led to a club meeting being called following the final league game, of the season, for everyone to air their views in a brainstorming session.
A merger with another club was raised at this meeting.
The pavilion improvement target of Autumn 1998 was moved, hopefully, to 1999 or probably 2000. David Attridge and Angela Porras arranged their final Dinner Dance, which like all their previous efforts proved to be well organised, highly enjoyable and always very entertaining.
Link-up with Temple Sheen who used our facilities and provided us with players at times, when we were short in numbers. Richard Tweddle representing the clubs 2nd X1won the overall Fullers League bowling award for the second year running with 322.4 Overs 86 Maidens 58 Wickets 775 Runs at an average of 13.36.

1999 - The idea of a Match Day Manager for home matches was introduced.
Lottery money for pavilion improvements not available this year, most probably in April/May 2000. First discussions re a merger with Burpham CC. took place in January. In May, Burpham expressed a keen interest in merging and attended a committee meeting. A sub committee was set up to discuss further progress. An EGM agreed to the merger. Two Saturday XI's would play in the Fullers League and a third Saturday XI would play in the Wey Valley League. Two Sunday XI's would be fielded. A money making games machine was installed in the pavilion.
Progress was being made with regard to protective fencing behind the pavilion area. President's XI match saw the introduction of the Tim Bailey Memorial Cup to be played for on the day. Final AGM of the Worplesdon Cricket Club.
Worplesdon Cricket Club merged with Burpham Cricket Club on Monday 6th December 1999 and became Worplesdon and Burpham Cricket Club.
